  36.      Probenecid should be stored at room temperature in a tightly closed
  37. container.
  38.  
  39. USES
  40.  
  41.      Probenecid is used to prevent gout attacks.  It increases the elimination
  42. of uric acid (the chemical responsible for the symptoms of gout) through the
  43. kidneys.  Probenecid is also occasionally used in combination with penicillin
  44. or ampicillin to increase the length of time that the antibiotics remain in
  45. the bloodstream.

  47. TREATMENT
  48.  
  49.      In order to avoid stomach irritation, you may take probenecid with a full
  50. glass of water or milk.  You should also drink at least ten to 12 full
  51. eight-ounce glasses of liquids (not alcoholic beverages) each day to prevent
  52. formation of uric acid kidney stones.
  53.      If you miss a dose of this medication, take the missed dose as soon as
  54. possible, unless it is almost time for the next dose.  In that case, do not
  55. take the missed dose at all; just return to your regular dosing schedule.  Do
  56. not double the next dose.

  58. SIDE EFFECTS
  59.  
  60.      Minor.
  61.  
  62.      Dizziness, frequent urination, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, rash,
  63. sore gums, or vomiting.  These side effects should disappear as your body
  64. adjusts to the medication.
  65.      If you feel dizzy, sit or lie down for a while; get up slowly from a
  66. sitting or reclining position, and be careful on stairs.
  67.  
  68.      Major.
  69.  
  70.      Tell your doctor about any side effects that are persistent or
  71. particularly bothersome.  TELL YOUR DOCTOR about fatigue, fever, flushing,
  72. lower back pain, painful or difficult urination, sore throat, unusual bleeding
  73. or bruising, or yellowing of the eyes or skin.

  75. INTERACTIONS
  76.  
  77.      Probenecid interacts with several other types of drugs:
  78.      1. Aspirin and pyrazinamide antagonize (act against) the antigout effects
  79. of probenecid.
  80.      2. The blood levels of methotrexate, sulfonamide antibiotics,
  81. nitrofurantoin, oral antidiabetic medicines, ketoprofen, naproxen,
  82. indomethacin, rifampin, sulindac, dapsone, and clofibrate can be increased by
  83. probenecid, which can lead to an increase in side effects.
  84.      3. Alcohol, chlorthalidone, ethacrynic acid, furosemide, or thiazide
  85. diuretics (water pills) can increase blood uric acid levels, which can
  86. decrease the effectiveness of probenecid.
  87.      Before starting to take probenecid, BE SURE TO TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any
  88. medications you are taking, especially any of those listed above.

  90. WARNINGS
  91.  
  92.      * Tell your doctor about unusual or allergic reactions you have had to
  93. any medications, especially to probenecid.
  94.      * Before starting to take probenecid, be sure to tell your doctor if you
  95. now have or if you have ever had blood diseases, diabetes mellitus,
  96. glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency, kidney stones, peptic
  97. ulcers, or porphyria.
  98.      * Diabetics using Clinitest urine glucose tests may get erroneously high
  99. readings of blood sugar levels while they are taking this drug.  Temporarily
  100. changing to Clinistix or Tes-Tape urine tests will avoid this problem.
  101.      * If probenecid makes you dizzy, do not take part in any activity that
  102. requires alertness, such as driving a car or operating potentially dangerous
  103. machinery.
  104.      * Avoid taking large amounts of vitamin C while on probenecid.  Vitamin C
  105. can increase the risk of kidney stone formation.
  106.      * Probenecid is not effective during an attack of gout.  It is used to
  107. prevent attacks.
  108.      * Tell your doctor if you are pregnant.  Although probenecid appears to
  109. be safe, it does cross the placenta.  Extensive studies in pregnant women have
  110. not been conducted.  Also, tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding an
  111. infant.  It is not known whether probenecid passes into breast milk.
